Family reunification in the Czech Republic: how it works and how we help

A plain-language overview of family reunification for foreign nationals living in the Czech Republic: who it is for, how the process usually goes and where we can help.

What is family reunification?

Family reunification lets a foreign national who lives in the Czech Republic bring close family members to live with them. The permit is officially called a long-term residence permit for the purpose of family reunification. It is not a tourist visa and not a short-stay visa.

The exact type of permit, the conditions and the documents depend on your own residence status, on who you want to bring and on the rules the authorities apply at the time. This page is general information only. It is not legal advice, and CzechStay is not a law firm.

Who can be brought

This page is for foreign nationals living in the Czech Republic — for example on an employee card, a blue card or another long-term residence permit — who want to bring family members to join them.

Husband or wife

A spouse joining you is the most common case of family reunification.

Children

Minor children joining a parent are the other most common case.

Partner

In some situations an unmarried partner may also be possible, depending on the details of your case.

Parents

Parents can join only in specific situations set by the authorities.

Whether it applies to your family depends on the details of your case. In the free 15-minute call you tell us your situation and we tell you honestly what to look into and what we can help with.

How the process usually goes

  • You check the current conditions with the authorities and decide who will apply.
  • Your family and you collect the required documents, and have foreign documents translated where needed.
  • An appointment at the immigration office (OAMP) or at a Czech embassy is booked, depending on your case.
  • The application is submitted and the authority decides within its own time limits.
  • After a positive decision your family travels to the Czech Republic.

Every case is different. The authorities set the current requirements, fees and time limits, so always check them on the official websites listed below.
