How Much Does Family Reunification in the Czech Republic Really Cost?

Planning to bring your family to the Czech Republic? Here is a full breakdown of the real costs — and where good planning can save you money.

Are you planning to bring your husband, wife or children from a non-EU country to the Czech Republic? One of the first questions you will ask is: "How much is this all going to cost us?"

Many people assume they will only pay a few thousand crowns in fees at the embassy. In reality, the costs are made up of several items. So that nothing catches you off guard during the process, we have put together an overview of the costs, from the first document to landing in Prague.

To put it plainly: for one adult, expect basic costs starting at around CZK 42,000. Each child adds further costs.

Here is what that amount is made up of, and where good planning can save you money.

1. Administrative fees: fixed by law

You pay the fee when you submit the application for a long-term residence permit:

  • Adult: CZK 2,500
  • Child under 15: CZK 1,000

These amounts are set by law and cannot be avoided. At the embassy, they are usually paid in local currency or in euros.

2. Documents, legalisation and translations: from CZK 3,400

For Czech authorities to accept foreign documents (marriage certificate, children's birth certificates, criminal record extract), the documents need higher-level authentication, either an apostille or superlegalisation. They must also be translated into Czech by a court-certified translator.

  • Translation of all documents starts at CZK 3,400. The price depends on the number of pages and the language.
  • Record extracts, apostilles and superlegalisation are paid in the country of origin. Prices vary widely from country to country.
  • Small extras: a certified signature on the proof of accommodation, photos and postage. Expect a few hundred crowns.

A court-certified translator in the Czech Republic is usually much cheaper than a translation agency abroad.

Watch out for the 180-day rule. Documents must not be older than 180 days when you submit the application. If you prepare them too early, you will pay for them twice.

3. Health insurance: the largest cost

Your husband or wife must have comprehensive health insurance for foreigners. Prices differ a lot depending on where you buy it:

  • Without a recommendation: from CZK 26,000 per year
  • Through our partner insurers: from CZK 15,800 per year

We will be happy to compare offers from our partner insurers and recommend the one that best fits your situation.

More savings once your partner starts working: A partner holding a long-term residence permit for family reunification can work in the Czech Republic without a work permit. Once they start a job with a Czech employer, they join the public health insurance system, and the employer pays the contributions. From then on, they no longer need the commercial insurance.

If our office is your coordinator, we will cancel the policy and arrange the refund of the unused premium free of charge. The sooner your partner starts working, the more money you get back.

4. Flights and travel: from CZK 10,000 per person

One-way flights from non-EU countries, for example from Asia or the Middle East, start at around CZK 10,000 per person. The price depends on the season and on how far in advance you book. Through our trusted flight suppliers, we can offer you discounted fares.

The date your visa will be issued can only be estimated. Don't rush into buying tickets. Wait for the Ministry of the Interior (OAMP) to approve the application, or choose a flexible fare.

5. Assistance and coordination: packages from CZK 13,000

The price of professional support depends on the package you choose. It can range from a consultation and document review to a complete turnkey service, including courier delivery and appointment booking.

Is a coordinator worth the cost? Look at the numbers. Our partner rates alone save you over CZK 10,000 on health insurance, the difference between CZK 26,000 and CZK 15,800. That covers most of the price of the basic package. Add the refund of unused premium once your partner starts working, plus discounted flights, and the assistance ends up costing you very little in practice. You also get peace of mind that your documents are complete and correctly prepared.

Summary: prepare early and avoid unnecessary losses

Family reunification takes both money and time. The applicants who lose the most money are those who underestimate the formal requirements. If the authorities suspend the procedure or reject the application, for example because of an incorrectly calculated income, invalid legalisation or documents older than 180 days, you may lose the fees, translations and bookings you have already paid for.
